Unifor National President Lana Payne said Monday evening that a deal has still not been reached between the union representing 5,600 Ford workers and the automaker.

“We are not where we need to be,” she said, adding that the consequences of a strike would be severe with all Ford employees walking off the job.

Payne said the union would not waiver from its core priorities, including pension improvements and increased wages for its members.

She said the union has been keeping a close eye on the ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike in the U.S. but remains focused on the issues that matter to Canadian workers.

Unifor’s auto workers voted 98.9 per cent in favour of a strike if the bargaining committee fails to secure a new collective agreement by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday.
