Speaking during question period on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau caused quite a stir when he called former finance minister Bill Morneau as well former and current Bank of Canada governors Mark Carney and Tiff Macklem as “random Liberals” in response to a question.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre was accusing the Liberal party of overspending and contributing to inflation, referencing past statements from Morneau, Carney and Macklem.

“You know the Conservative leader is stumbling over himself when he starts quoting random Liberals,” Trudeau said, to jeers from the crowd for nearly a minute.

Conservative MP Garnett Genuis also demanded to know whether Trudeau ever asked Dominic Barton, a former ambassador and past director of consulting firm McKinsey, about his work with Purdue pharma and opioid sales. Trudeau retaliated by calling out Poilievre’s approach to harm reduction and accusing Conservatives of digging into “random conspiracy theories.”

Barton is set to face questions from members of Parliament amid concerns about the number of contracts it has received under the current Liberal government.
