Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of a $6-billion infrastructure fund included in the upcoming budget was disrupted Tuesday by protesters.
Banging drums and chanting "respect the treaty!" the protesters, believed to be there in response to the Department of Fisheries arresting Indigenous fishers, continued to make noise throughout the Prime Minister's remarks.
Speaking over the protesters, Trudeau also announced a $400-million top up to the Housing Accelerator Fund.
The $6-billion infrastructure will include $1 billion in direct funding for cities to fullfill urgent housing needs. The remaining $5 billion will help be earmarked for provinces and territories.
The Liberals are attaching strings to the funding for provinces and territories, which will only be available if certain conditions are met. This includes the adoption of a recently announced renters bill of rights.
The deadline to secure a deal will be Jan. 1, 2025 for provinces and April 1, 2025 for territories.
