Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for a "lasting peace" in Gaza on Friday, amid a four-day truce between Israel and Hamas that would allow for the release of hostages and the delivery of aid.

Trudeau made the comments alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, who were in St. John's, Newfoundland for a two-day EU-Canada Summit.

Trudeau also reiterated Canada's continued support for Ukraine, announcing that Canada would donate over 11,000 assault rifles and over 9 million rounds of ammunition to aid Ukraine in its counteroffensive against Russia.

The leaders also announced Friday that Canada would join the European Union's $100-billion scientific research program Horizon Europe and Trudeau announced a deal to build water bombers and ship them to the EU, after both regions faced devastating forest fires this past summer.
