Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada carefully considered all factors before it banned China’s Huawei and ZTE from the country’s 5G telecommunications network over security concerns, saying the decision will keep Canadians “safe and secure into the future.”

“We took the time to carefully analyze the situation, look at all sorts of factors, to look very closely at what our allies and partners are doing around the world in regards to telecommunications safety and we made the decision to move forward in a way that will ensure the safety of Canadians as the world moves towards 5G which will surround us even more,” Trudeau said on Friday.

Canada was the last of the Five Eyes allies to implement a ban. The delayed decision led Canadian telecommunications players to ink deals with other technology companies, effectively freezing out the Chinese telecoms.

Canadian companies will now have five years to remove any already installed Huawei technology from their networks.

Trudeau conceded the decision could lead to challenges when it comes to trade with China.
