Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his government’s "very difficult decision" on Wednesday to allow Germany to return the controversial turbines being serviced in Canada to Russia‘s Gazprom amid outcry over the move.

Canada needed to return six turbines for a pipeline that carries natural gas to Europe from Russia in the face of Moscow’s constant attempts to “weaponize” energy, he said.

The sanctions are "aimed at (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and his enablers and aren't designed to harm our allies and their populations," Trudeau said, adding that Ottawa will continue to "unequivocally" stand with Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Canada for its decision, warning Moscow will see this as a manifestation of weakness.
