Tropical storm Claudette dumped nearly nine inches of rain on parts of Louisiana on Saturday and was expected to produce life-threatening flash flooding across the region, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The storm is located about 75 km southwest of New Orleans, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h, the NHC said.

Claudette is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by Saturday night and become a post-tropical cyclone on Sunday, the NHC added.

Tornado warnings were issued from the Mississippi coast to the western Florida panhandle. There were reports of storm damage to a fishing pier on Dauphin Island, Alabama, according to Glen Brannan of the Mobile County Emergency Management Agency. He said there was no word of injuries.
