Among Ukraine's neighbors, the war is weighing particularly hard on Moldova, where tens of thousands of people have demonstrated in favor of joining the European Union.
Moldova has faced rising pressure from Moscow since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The government of President Maia Sandu, and most of its citizens are looking West, and want closer ties to the EU. But just inside the country's Ukrainian border is Transnistria, a breakaway region that has hosted Russian troops for decades.
