Tens of thousands of people marched through various cities in Myanmar, including the capital of Naypitaw, to denounce last week's military coup and demand the release of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The protests are considered the biggest the country has seen in more than a decade.

Many gestured with the three-finger salute, which has become a symbol of protest against the coup. Drivers honked their horns in support of the protesters, and some took to motorbikes to drive through cities.

As night fell in the country, while the protesters had dispersed, people in Yangon rose to bang on kitchenware in a further show of resistance even as power cuts affected many districts of the city.
