Some 80,000 protesters took part in a rally in Berlin on Saturday in support of the ongoing protests in Iran, according to local police. They gathered in the centre of the capital around the Victory Column, with many waving Iran's pre-revolutionary flags and holding banners condemning the treatment of women in Iran or bearing the names of women who were killed.
"It's the first time that so many people in our nation are united, regardless of their political beliefs before and after [the] revolution. I am really proud to be here today," said protestor Lilu, who declined to give her surname.
Global protests began after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who was arrested in mid-September in Tehran by the morality police for allegedly breaking the rules on wearing a headscarf. Three days later, she died under disputed circumstances.
So far, more than 240 people have been killed and thousands arrested in the protests in numerous parts of Iran, according to human rights activists. The protests have turned into one of the most serious crises for the leadership in Tehran since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, who blames foreign forces for the development.
