NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that Israel has the right to defend itself following the “horrendous” terror attack perpetrated by Hamas over the weekend.

Stoltenberg said that some NATO members, including the U.S., had already begun providing support to Israel in the wake of the deadly attack. He added that members and allies “have the capability” to provide support to Israel, while continuing to send military aid to Ukraine.

“I also expect that, of course, when we see Israel’s response it will be proportionate, and it is important, as this conflict continues, to do whatever is possible to prevent the loss of innocent lives,” Stoltenberg said.

Lloyd Austin, U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, echoed Stoltenberg’s comments and said America would “absolutely” be able to support both Ukraine and Israel at the same time.

Austin said the USS Gerald R. Ford strike group had reached the Mediterranean and that air force fighter squadrons were also being extended in the region.
