Speaking from the White House on Saturday, U.S. President Joe Biden promised Israel “rock-solid and unwavering support” after the ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel at daybreak. The militant group fired thousands of rockets as dozens of fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea, catching the country off guard on a major holiday.
“When I spoke to Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu this morning, I told him the United States stands with the people of Israel in the face of these terrorist assaults,” Biden said, adding that he remains in “close contact” with Netanyahu as the situation continues to develop.
Several hours after the invasion began, Hamas militants were still fighting gunbattles inside several Israeli communities in a surprising show of strength that shook the country. Israel officials said more than 200 people have been killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said at least 198 people have been killed and at least 1,610 wounded in the territory in Israel’s retaliation.
