Cities across the United States got an early start on St. Patrick’s Day celebrations on Sunday, a day before the holiday that honours the patron saint of Ireland.

Both Tampa River and the Chicago River were died a vibrant shade of green to mark the holiday. Meanwhile, parades were held in Georgia, in both Savannah and Atlanta and in Denver, Col.

New York City held its renowned St. Patrick’s Day parade in Manhattan, with around 15,000 marchers and an impressive two million spectators joining the festivities.

"We ourselves are Irish and it's great to see Irish people worldwide being celebrated, especially in a city as big as New York," an Irish tourist said. "There's more people living in New York than there is in the whole of Ireland, so to come here and see this, to see the celebration is great for us. It's a pride thing, it's great to see worldwide."
