Cities around the world ushered in the year of the tiger, as they celebrated Lunar New Year on Tuesday.

In the Chinese city of Qiandong, buildings were lit up in brilliant displays to ring in the new year.

Meanwhile, in New York City and San Francisco, people rang in the year of the tiger with a celebratory lion dance and the hiss of fire crackers. In the Chinese tradition, firecrackers are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.

In Malaysia, people welcomed a new year on the lunar calendar with an annual underwater lion dance, which had been cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19. Others celebrated with a visit to temple after last year’s celebrations were confined to the home.
