Lunar New Year celebrations to mark the "year of the rabbit" were held on Saturday and Sunday in cities around the world, including Beijing, Havana and New York City.
The actual new year is observed on Sunday, but celebrations started early in some countries including a new year's eve dinner in Beijing, and festivities in Moscow on Saturday. They continued through the day on Sunday, with floral tributes held in Pyongyang, North Korea, and festivals held in London, England, and New York City.
Some attendees in New York were also asked how they felt about their safety after a shooting during Lunar New Year festivities in Monterey Park, Calif. Florence Li said she sent her thoughts to those who lost loved ones, but added she felt safe in New York but that being a big city, "you have to be on your guard."
The festival's many customs, observed by millions across the globe, all link back to the idea of inviting good fortune and prosperity and chasing away bad luck.
