There are calls to change the shop trading hours act, after supermarkets chose to open during the Easter holiday weekend despite restrictions and the possibility of fines.
Foodstuffs' New World stores in Wānaka opened the doors on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, breaching trading laws and facing fines of up to $1000.
Currently councils can apply for an exemption but some want for retailers to have that choice.
Almost all shops are required to close on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday, unless they are deemed essential or have an exemption.
Carolyn Young from Retail New Zealand joined Breakfast to discuss further.
