Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are continuing to lash the West Coast the wild weather system now moving north.

MetService meteorologist John Law told Breakfast it was a "good day to be keeping an eye on the weather radar", as the deluge moves to the North Island.

Southland, Tasman and Marlborough all have heavy rain warnings, residents in Spring Creek near Blenheim were told to evacuate by 9 am this morning, as the Wairau catchment is expected to rise.
