Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Minister of Women, Gender Equality and Youth Marci Ien said that a bill introduced in the Senate earlier that day is meant to ensure that the Canadian criminal justice system “holds offenders to account for their crimes.”

Giving examples of administering noxious substances such as date rape drugs and sharing of non-consensual images or “revenge porn,” Ien said that the bill also highlights the severity of “heartless crimes.”

The introduced legislation would add the non-consensual sharing of intimate images and extortion to the list of offences that could land someone on the National Sex Offender Registry.

The changes would also lay out who gets added automatically to the list: such as serious child sex offenders and repeat sexual offenders, unless they can “demonstrate that they pose no risk to the community.”
