As the James Smith Cree Nation community grieves together following the horrific stabbing spree that took place Sunday, a candlelight vigil was held on Wednesday in honour of the victims and in solidarity with the community.

The First Nations University of Canada held three candlelight vigils at each of the school’s campuses, simultaneously. The campuses are located in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

“I pray that we can help the community, that we can learn to be kind, and to be respectful, and to get back to the way that we used to do things; and that’s to take care of each other,” said vigil attendee Sandra Ahenakew.

Saskatchewan RCMP confirmed Wednesday the capture of Myles Sanderson, a suspect in one of the worst mass killings in Canadian history, after an intense four-day search that held national and international attention. He was pronounced dead in hospital shortly after being taken into custody.

Damien Sanderson, Myles’ brother and also considered a suspect in the attacks, was later found dead on James Smith Cree Nation with injuries police said were not believed to be self-inflicted — suggesting he may have been attacked by Myles.

Global’s Adam MacVicar reports.
