James Smith Cree Nation Chief Wally Burns called for the Canadian government to provide funding for tribal policing during a press conference on Thursday in the aftermath of the Saskatchewan stabbing rampage that took 10 lives and left both suspects dead.

Chief Burns also called for treatment centres and awareness to prevent such tragedies from happening again, and issued a plea for an end to violence.

"These acts of violence have to stop and they have to stop now," he said.

He also offered condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth ||, who had previously written a letter to James Smith Cree nations condemning the attack.

Most of the victims were from the James Smith Cree Nation, with the community on edge and in grief since the fatal stabbings.

The community attending the conference was also joined by the RCMP, Premier Scott Moe and federal ministers.
