On Tuesday, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko shared his version of talks with Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, as members of the mercenary group marched on Moscow over the weekend.

According to Lukashenko, he managed to talk Prigozhin out of trying to enter Moscow, warning him that the Russian military would “squash you like a bug.”

Lukashenko also said that he tried to convince Prigozhin that his demand to have Moscow hand over Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and General Chief of Staff of the Russian Army Valery Gerasimov was unrealistic.

In addition, the Belarusian president expressed concern that the troubles in Russia could spread to neighbouring Belarus. “If Russia falls, we will be buried in the wreckage,” he told assembled military personnel.

The exile of Prigozhin, the 62-year-old owner of the Wagner Group, was part of a deal that ended the short-lived mutiny in Russia. He and some of his troops were welcome to stay “for some time” at their own expense, Lukashenko said.
