Joe Biden has spoken from Washington, telling reporters he has had calls with key allies to "make sure we're all on the same page" following the attempted rebellion in Russia.

The US president said it was agreed Vladimir Putin should be given "no excuse to blame this on the West" or NATO.

He added: "We made clear that we were not involved. We had nothing to do with it. This was part of a struggle within the Russian system," he said.
