Russian President Vladimir Putin recently held talks with Wagner mercenary group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin and his commanders to discuss the armed and short-lived insurrection the mercenary group attempted on Russia’s military headquarters on June 24, according to the Kremlin on Monday.

Though the Wagner group agreed to a deal and put a swift end to their revolt — backing down just one day later to avoid the risk of civil bloodshed — it was seen as a major challenge to Putin's grip on power.

The Wagner chief’s deal, which included Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, allowed Prigozhin to move to Belarus and promised amnesty for his troops on the terms that he would end the rebellion.

Putin’s newly-confirmed meeting with Prigozhin and his commanders took place at the Kremlin on June 29, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, days after the military leader was exiled to Belarus. It is unclear what was discussed at the Kremlin.
