Queen Elizabeth II was often depicted with a quality that made her seem out of reach, ever-present on our postage stamps and coins as the head of state. What made her feel real and relatable was her family.
Throughout the Queen’s 70 years of reign, the moments that have been most tumultuous can all be traced back to her family, with her greatest sorrows linked to her own children and grandchildren. The divorces. The scandals. The fallouts. The fall from grace. These episodes have been a reminder that every family has its problems, and the Windsors are no exception.
Before her passing, royal correspondent Katie Nicholl believed that Her Majesty’s last wishes would have been for all the loose ends with her family tied up — to be able to rest knowing that her grandchildren are on talking terms, that Camilla will be accepted as Queen Consort, and that the monarchy is in a as secure and safe place as possible, in order to stand a chance in the future.
Speaking with Global’s Dawna Friesen, Nicholl talks about what will come next. With King Charles III in his 70s, it can be expected that his reign will be a relatively short one, with no Platinum Jubilee.
Though a short reign can still be an effective one, will the future of the British monarchy ultimately lie in the hands of the Cambridges?
