A Mountie has died after a vehicle collision that occurred in Alberta's Strathcona County early Monday, according to the RCMP.

In a news release issued shortly after 10 a.m., police said the crash occurred at about 2 a.m.

"The officer succumbed to their injuries," the RCMP said.

At a news conference in Sherwood Park on Monday afternoon, Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki identified the officer who died in the line of duty as Const. Harvinder ("Harvey") Singh Dhami. Zablocki said Dhami was en route to a noise complaint call when the vehicle he was driving hit a concrete barrier.

"This is never the kind of news we want to share," Zablocki said.

Dale Kendall, the Strathcona RCMP detachment commander, said Dhami is survived by his wife.
