Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday called the diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics by the U.S. and its allies “a mistake” driven by a desire to restrain China's development on the world stage.
Several countries, including Canada, have announced a diplomatic boycott of the Games over concerns of China’s record of human rights abuses. A diplomatic boycott refers specifically to non-athletes.
Putin told reporters that Washington will not prevent China's emergence as a global competitor by using sports “to solve momentary political issues.”
