China’s Ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu on Tuesday reacted to the decision by the United States to not send government officials to the 2022 Winter Olympics due to China’s human rights “atrocities,” the White House said Monday.

Peiwu said on Tuesday that “actually nobody cares if they will be there – the officials will be there or not because no invitation is sent to them.” Peiwu added that “sports is sports, it should not be politicized.”

New U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Cohen remarked on Tuesday after presenting his credentials to the governor general in Ottawa that “I have a high level of confidence that Canada and the United States will be aligned on our China policy, including with respect to the Olympics.”
