Pope Francis is leaving Canada after a week-long "pilgrimage of penance" for the harms perpetrated on survivors of the residential school system in Canada, where he begged forgiveness for the Catholic Church’s role in a “deplorable” system that tried to strip Indigenous peoples of their language, culture and world view.
On Monday, he apologized for the “evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous peoples,” during a speech in Maskwacis, Alta.
He will make a brief stop in Iqaluit on Friday before heading home to Vatican City.
