Pope Francis arrived in Edmonton, Alta., on Sunday to begin his six-day visit to Canada, where the focus will be on Indigenous reconciliation.

The pope recently called the visit a "penitence trip," and told reporters aboard the plane that the trip must be handled with care.

After disembarking the plane, he was met by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Gov. Gen. Mary Simon and other officials, before entering a hanger where a six-person drum circle from the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation gave a performance. He then welcomed a group of Indigenous leaders and residential school survivors as he sat alongside Trudeau and Simon.

The pope later entered his motorcade, which will take him to the St. Joseph Seminary, where he will be staying for the Alberta portion of his trip. He also plans to travel to Quebec City and Iqaluit during the Canada visit.

Thousands of people are to travel by bus, plane and even boat in the coming days to attend events during the historic papal visit.

Pope Francis will remain in Edmonton for a couple of days before going to Quebec City on Wednesday and Iqaluit on Friday. The visit will include public and private events, with an emphasis on Indigenous participation.
