Pope Francis participated in an annual holy pilgrimage to Lac Ste. Anne in Alberta, a lake that's believed to have healing powers, during a gathering that has a history dating back more than 130 years.

The first official pilgrimage to the sacred site was held in 1889 and began as a two-day gathering with the Métis, Indigenous and First Nations people attending a Cree sermon on one day, and an English sermon the following day.

While the Pope’s visit has been anticipated as healing for some Indigenous people, it may exacerbate pain for others.

The papal visit to the country is primarily intended for the Pope to apologize in person, on Canadian soil, for the abuses Indigenous Peoples and their ancestors suffered at the hands of Catholic missionaries in residential schools.
