Pope Francis was welcomed by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Wednesday at Belém Palace on XXXVII World Youth Day.

Pilgrims around the presidential palace waiting to catch a glimpse of the pontiff said World Youth Day is an occasion to meet and connect with their faith.

He also delivered an address, where he discussed protecting children and human life.

Francis was speaking at the start of a five-day trip to Portugal to attend a global gathering of young Catholics known as World Youth Day, held every two or three years in a different city.
