During his Easter speech on Sunday, Pope Francis urged countries to quicken distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, especially to poverty-stricken countries, and denounced continued armed conflict, calling it “scandalous,” as the pandemic causes social and economic suffering.

Francis appealed anew to the international community in his “Urbi et Orbi?” address (Latin for “To the City and to the World”), calling on it to overcome delays in distributing COVID-19 vaccines and to ensure supplies reach the poorest countries.

“Everyone, especially the most vulnerable among us, requires assistance and has the right to have access to necessary care,” he said.

The pontiff delivered his speech about an hour after celebrating Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, with a small number of faithful gathering to hear his message due to pandemic protocols. For a second year in a row, the pope delivered his address indoors to discourage crowds from gathering at St. Peter’s Square.
