Pope Francis called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all Israeli hostages in his traditional Easter Sunday address, which marks one of the most important days in the Christian calendar.

“Let us not allow the current hostilities to continue to have grave repercussions on the civil population, by now at the limit of its endurance, and above all on the children. How much suffering we see in children's eyes! Those children in that land of war have forgotten how to smile,” Pope Francis said.

The pontiff presided over Mass in a packed and flower-bedecked St Peter's Square, and delivered his "Urbi et Orbi" blessing and message from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. The pope's Easter message traditionally focuses on world affairs, and he mentioned other flashpoints including Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon, Haiti, Sudan, the Sahel, Congo and Mozambique.

Francis, 87, has been in poor health in recent weeks, forcing him on repeated occasions to limit his public speaking and cancel engagements as he did on Good Friday, skipping at short notice a procession at Rome's Colosseum.
