Pope Francis on Sunday called for the wounded in Gaza to be taken care of immediately and the protection of civilians to be assured, along with more humanitarian aid for the strip and the freeing of hostages held by Hamas.

After his weekly Angelus Prayer at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, Francis appealed to Sudanese leaders and the international community to put an end to violence in Sudan as a humanitarian crisis in the country worsens and ethnic violence escalates in the western region of Darfur.

A war erupted on Apr. 15 between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after weeks of rising tension between the two sides over a plan to integrate forces as part of a transition from military rule to civilian democracy.
