Grilling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in question period on Wednesday over his handling of the opioid crisis, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre called Trudeau a “radical idealogue” and said his policies around “safe supply” had led to an increase in drug-related deaths.
Trudeau defended his government’s policies toward decriminalization and safe supply, saying it follows a “compassionate, science-based approach.”
“We will continue to be there to help people, not imprison them,” he said.
“They are helping to kill people,” Poilievre shot back.
Trudeau said in response the government needs to respond to the opioid crisis, which is “taking lives left, right and centre.”
