CUPE's Ontario School Board Council of Unions president Laura Walton pushed back Wednesday on Education Minister Stephen Lecce's call for an end to a proposed one-day strike this Friday, saying that the strike notice was "legal" and "not interfering" with the bargaining process.

She said what was interfering was the government's legislation to impose a contract on 55,000 education workers and Lecce's "complete refusal to negotiate."

Walton also added "what's really causing problems" with bargaining between the union and the government is that the union thinks the parties are actively negotiating but then hears from Lecce "that they're not," creating "mixed messages."

She also expressed concern over the "legislated offer," including its wage proposal
