Nova Scotia pauses AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine rollout, introduces paid sick-leave program

Nova Scotia Premier Iain Rankin announced that the province would follow the lead of Alberta and Ontario in pausing the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, adding that many Nova Scotians are already opting for mRNA vaccines.

Rankin said officials are awaiting the results of a global study looking at the impact of mixing the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine with another type of vaccine before making a final decision.

Rankin also unveiled a new paid sick-leave program on Wednesday that will reimburse workers who have to stay home because they are ill or need to quarantine.

The paid sick leave program will cover workers’ expenses for up to four days and up to a maximum of $160 per day. The employer will pay workers for the time they are off and the province will reimburse these businesses, the premier explained.
