The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met on Thursday to discuss human rights abuses in North Korea (DPRK).

Hearing horror stories from a North Korean defector during the meeting, U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield critiqued the nation for using “repression and cruelty” to build nuclear weapons.

"Kim Jong Un's repressive, totalitarian control of society – and the systemic, widespread denial of human rights and fundamental freedoms – ensures the regime can expend inordinate public resources developing its unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs, without public objection," she said.

Speaking on his experience growing up and living under the country’s totalitarian rule, Ilhyeok Kim said if North Koreans express any disrespect, or disagree with their government they are taken to a prison camp “until they die” or simply “shot to death.”

North Korea has repeatedly denied accusations of citizen abuse and blames sanctions for a dire humanitarian situation.
