West African leaders attending an emergency summit ordered a standby force to prepare for a possible military intervention as pressure mounts on Niger’s coup leaders.
The West African regional power bloc maintains its top priority after last month’s coup is the peaceful return to power of Niger’s democratically elected president.
Meawhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said he holds the junta responsible for the welfare of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, whom the military is holding prisoner.
