NATO steps up support for Ukraine as Russian invasion reaches 1-month mark | FULL
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday, after an extraordinary summit on the situation in Ukraine, that member countries had agreed to step up support for Ukraine as Russia’s invasion of the eastern European country reached the one-month mark.
Stoltenberg said NATO leaders had approved an additional four battlegroups in Bulgarian, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
He added that 100,000 U.S. troops are supporting NATO efforts across Europe and said Canada and European allies had stepped up with their own contributions. Stoltenberg said 40,000 troops are under direct NATO command, mostly in the eastern flank of the alliance.
“Today, NATO leaders agreed to reset our deterrents and defence for a longer-term,” Stoltenberg said, adding that they are facing a “new security reality.”
Stoltenberg said the military alliance would also provide Ukraine with cyber security assistance and equipment to help protect against biological, chemical, radiological and nuclear threats.
