Myanmar protests: Anti-military demonstrations continue for 9th straight day

Mass protests against the military continued in cities across Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, on Feb. 14, with a crowd gathering outside the U.S. Embassy in Yangon.

According to Reuters, the latest day of protests came as the army reintroduced a law requiring people to report overnight visitors, and also had allowed security forces to detain suspects and search properties without court approval.

Also, an armoured vehicle drove around Yangon. It is believed to be the first time such a vehicle, believed to be a Ukrainian-made armoured personnel carrier, has been seen in the commercial capital since the military coup two weeks ago. It wasn't immediately clear why the military vehicle was driving on Sule Pagoda Road, around Yangon City Hall and the city centre.

Plus, thousands of mostly silent demonstrators paraded through central Tokyo on Sunday in protest against the coup in Myanmar, many carrying photos of detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi in what organizers said was the largest such march in Japan to date.

More than 4,000 took part in the protest, organizers said, streaming through the downtown shopping areas of Shibuya and Omotesando with posters saying "Help us save Myanmar" and "Stop Crimes Against Humanity." Tokyo police said they couldn't comment on how many people attended the event.

This marks the ninth straight day of demonstrations in Myanmar.
