Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told a cabinet meeting on Thursday that the country would work faster to modernize the country's transport system and compensation would be provided to the families of train crash victims.
“I consequently take responsibility. We cannot, we do not want to, and we must not hide behind a series of human errors. If the remote project had been completed, it would have been practically impossible for this accident to happen,” said Mitsotakis during the meeting.
Mitsotakis said the first priority would be to provide economic, psychological and ethical support to families. He also re-iterated an apology to the public and said the government would move faster and more effectively, "starting immediately" to bring systems up to date technologically and "regenerate" the country.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Greek university students rallied in Athens on Thursday to express outrage over the death of fellow students in the recent train crash that killed 57 people. Their demonstration comes after days of strikes and protests in Greece over the accident, some erupting in violence.
