Greek protesters hurled firebombs and other incendiary devices in Athens on Wednesday as one of several demonstrations took place across the city, as anger continues over a deadly train crash that left 57 people dead last Tuesday.
Among the protests were also 24-hour rolling strikes by railway workers, who said they were angered as workers had known of inadequacies in the system but complaints had not been responded to.
"We drivers have filed complaints about these things, we have gone on strike about it, we have made warnings, we have protested, but unfortunately no one listened to us," Kostas Geridounias, head of the Greek train workers union, said.
New Transport Minister George Gerapetritis said Wednesday the government would work to fix the issues the rail system has.
"We didn’t have time to finish something that we were obligated to finish. It is not easy to re-arrange a system with very heavy, chronic, decades-old illnesses in such a short amount of time, and it's good to review this, Gerapetrias said."
The protests and fatal crash come even as the conservative government was expected to call an election in the coming weeks.
