Clashes broke out in Athens on Sunday between police and a group of demonstrators over a train crash in Greece earlier this week that killed at least 57 people. University students and railway workers protested on Syntagma Square in central Athens over the accident, the deadliest in Greece's living memory.

Video shows demonstrators hurling objects including petrol bombs at riot police, as authorities moved in to contain the unrest, and police responded with volleys of tear gas. The night before, more than 1,000 protesters released lanterns into the air in memory of the train collision victims.

The union said it wanted a clear timetable for the implementation of safety protocols. Questions around the crash — which happened as the two trains were on the same track — involve faulty signaling and maintenance issues. Carriages were thrown off the tracks, crushed and engulfed in flames when a high-speed passenger train with more than 350 people on board collided head-on with a freight train late on Tuesday.

The protests were a few of several in the last few days in Athens and other cities in the country amid growing anger over the crash, which the government has blamed on human error.
