Thousands of protesters gathered in several Myanmar cities, including the capital of Naypyitaw, on Monday as they continued to oppose the military coup in the country, defying a warning from the junta that confrontation would cost more lives.

Businesses shut in a general strike called to oppose the coup and Facebook took action in response to the junta's chilling message, taking down the pages of the country's state-run TV.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an end to the repression and released hundreds detained since the coup began. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also said the European Union was considering imposing sanctions on Myanmar's "military regime" as a last resort but they would continue to work towards a de-escalation.
