Michigan State University shooting: Huge crowd gathers on campus to mourn victims

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addressed a large crowd of students and teachers who gathered on the grounds of Michigan State University to mourn those killed when a gunman opened fire on campus Monday evening.

“We shouldn’t have to live like this,” Whitmer told mourners in the crowd. “We shouldn’t have to subconsciously scan every room for an exit. Go through the grim exercise of figuring out who our last call would be to. Our campuses, churches, classrooms and communities should not be battlefields.”

Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraser and Alexandria Verner were killed, while five others were wounded. The shooter eventually killed himself.

Investigators don’t know why the suspect targeted the campus and say he had no known affiliation with the university.
