Speaking to journalists on Thursday, campus police said that the 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae, the gunman who killed three students at Michigan State University (MSU) and wounded five others, carried a note with him, suggesting a possible motive behind the shooting. Authorities also found a note on McRae that listed two schools in New Jersey and the names of a warehouse where he worked, a church and other locations, as well as two bus tickets.

“It appears based on the content of the note that he felt that he was slighted in some way by people or businesses. Did a mental health issue amplify that or was it a component of that? We’re not sure at this point,” MSU campus police deputy chief Chris Rozman said.

Rozman also detailed that McRae was in possession of two 9mm handguns and additional ammunition, noting that the guns were purchased legally, but were not registered.

During the briefing, authorities stressed that they were still uncertain about what caused McRae to open fire in two buildings on the school's main campus on Monday night, before killing himself hours later after police tracked him down. Authorities said that McRae had no known affiliation to the university and that they were trying to determine whether mental illness played a role in the rampage.
