Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, continued to erupt on Monday as lava threatened a crucial highway on Hawaii's Big Island. This live shot shows a view of fissure 3 erupting on the Northeast Rift Zone.

As of Saturday, the lava was just four kilometres from the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, according to an alert from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Geologists with the Hawaii Volcano Observatory said if the eruption at Mauna Loa, which started on Nov. 27, follows historical patterns, they expect it will continue for another one to two weeks.

Hawaiian officials have said they have a plan to shut down the highway if the lava gets close enough to pose a danger.
