Onlookers flocked to Hawaii's Mauna Loa on Thursday to see the world's largest active volcano that began erupting for the first time since 1984 earlier this week.

As Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency said, there were no signs that the lava will threaten populated areas. Dozens of people, including families with children still in their pajamas, started arriving near the summit.

They pulled up with camping chairs and settled in to watch the natural phenomenon for a few hours.

"It’s just pretty amazing that we get to see it in our lifetime, not many people have. And it’s just spectacular to see Mauna Loa, the longest mountain in the world, to finally erupt and Pele (goddess of volcanoes) doing her magic," Hawaii resident Tiphany Myers said.
