French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday he wanted to "piss off" people not vaccinated for COVID-19, in a slangy, cutting remark that prompted howls of condemnation from opposition rivals less than four months before the next presidential election.

"The unvaccinated, I really want to piss them off. And so, we're going to continue doing so, until the end. That's the strategy," Macron told Le Parisien newspaper in an interview published late on Tuesday.

This has garnered split reactions from the French public.

"He went a bit too far… They (the unvaccinated) are citizens who are being put aside in a way," pensioner Genevieve told Reuters.

Pensioner Jean, 89, said he agrees with Macron, adding that "those who are against the vaccine should understand the dangers, and they should get vaccinated.
